If you’re coming in for a RAM oil change, should you just get whatever oil the mechanic has laying around? Or should you be doing more research and trying out a different kind of oil in your RAM truck or Jeep SUV?

Here at Helfman Dodge Chrysler Jeep® RAM, we’ve watched the motor oil market diversify in recent years. Here’s what you need to know about the stuff that keeps your vehicle running smoothly.

Types of Oil

There are four types of oil that most drivers need to be concerned about.

• Conventional motor oil: This is the most commonly used type of motor oil. It’s been in use for a long time in a wide variety of different vehicles. These days, it’s primarily used by light-duty vehicles and newer cars that have simplistic engines. Cars with low to average mileage can also use conventional motor oil.
• High mileage motor oil: This is just what it sounds like. If your car has more than 75,000 miles on the odometer, ask your mechanics about switching to this oil. It could help minimize leaks and other issues.
• Synthetic motor oil: This is more expensive than conventional oil but offers better performance in some ways. It’s ideal for engines that are operating at extreme temperatures, and it can also be the best oil choice for hard working vehicles, like ones that frequently tow. It also comes loaded with additives that can help enhance performance and reduce the odds of it becoming more of a sludge.
• Synthetic blend: This is a blend of synthetic and conventional oils. It offers some of the performance benefits of synthetic oil at a lower price point. Full synthetic oil can be double or triple the price of conventional oil. The difference between the price of conventional and synthetic blend oil isn’t quite as pronounced.
