Jeep® Service Tips: Jump-Start Your Car

January 6th, 2023 by

The worst feeling as a driver is to try to start your car only to find it completely dead. But with the right equipment and know-how, this is a fairly easy fix. Of course, if you have this problem, the ultimate solution is to come down to our Jeep® Service Center at Helfman Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM FIAT to let our technicians have a look. Here’s a quick and straightforward guide to jump-starting your car.

Everything You Need

A drained battery can be remedied, sometimes, with a simple jump-start. To do that, you need two things: a pair of jumper cables and another vehicle. A good pair of heavy-duty gloves is also recommended.

Hooking Everything Up

Next, you’ll want to position the two vehicles with their engine compartments facing one another. Make sure the cars are turned off, then pop the hoods of both vehicles. Here are the steps from there:

  1. Connect the red end of one cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  2. Connect the other red end to the positive terminal of the car that’s providing the jump start.
  3. Attach the black end of one cable to the negative terminal of the booster car.
  4. Finally, attach the last black end to an unpainted metal part on the dead car’s engine, like a bolt or bracket.

Jump-Start

From here, start the engine of the vehicle that’s going to jump-start your car. Then, start your engine. If it doesn’t start immediately, wait a few minutes for it to build up a charge. When it does, disconnect the cables, starting with the black cables.
