Do Hybrid Vehicles Retain their Value?

What holds its value best, a conventional Jeep® SUV or a Jeep Hybrid model? These greener versions of the Jeep SUVs you know, and love are relatively new on the market, but hybrid cars have been around for a while. So, the experts here at Helfman Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM took a look at some of the data that’s out there about green cars and depreciation.

How Hybrid Models Hold Their Value

For a while, it seemed like most hybrid models wouldn’t hold their value as well as the conventional model they were based on. For example, if there had been a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid around a few years ago and you compared its depreciation to a regular Jeep Grand Cherokee from the same model year, it would be likely that the green car would depreciate faster.

However, that seems to have changed in recent years. A new study looked at cars from model years 2013 through 2017 and found that the differences in depreciation rate have mostly dropped off. A sedan from 2017 lost 50.7 percent of its value by the time it had hit 100,000 miles. The hybrid version of the same sedan lost 50.2 percent of its value.

Hybrid technology has improved a lot in recent years, so they have begun to hold their value better. At the same time, more drivers have begun to see the value in these greener vehicles. Hybrid cars have become more familiar to drivers, and they are more likely to want one as a result.
