‘Powertrain’ and ‘drivetrain’ are two of the most common terms you’ll hear at our local Dodge dealership – especially in the context of Dodge parts and service. But what exactly does each entail? 

Defining the Powertrain

One of the easiest ways to understand the powertrain of your Dodge Charger or new RAM truck is in the context of the human body. If you consider the “bones” of a car to be the chassis, then the muscles, ligaments, and tendons – all of those things that facilitate mobility – are the powertrain. 

In other words, the powertrain includes all the parts and components that convert combustion from the engine into motion, thus propelling the vehicle. The powertrain takes power from the engine and transfers it to the wheels. 

Defining the Drivetrain

A common misconception is that the drivetrain is an individual part. In reality, it’s several parts that all work together to move your car’s wheels. The components comprising the drivetrain literally “drive” a car into motion. 

Many of these parts are familiar to car owners. In fact, there are many common car parts that are included in the drivetrain – for example, the transmission, differential, and axles, along with wheels, CV joints, and driveshaft. So, if the term powertrain is used, it should refer to the power from the engine going to the wheels. Meanwhile, the drivetrain includes all of the kinetic parts except for the engine. The drivetrain is the term for all of the parts needed to move your car, but it doesn’t mean the actual power that is generated.
